Each one of us comes to a point in our life where we know we cannot go back and we have no idea where forward goes. The bridges are burned behind us whether it is a marriage, a job, a personal choice, someone dies, an illness or any other ending in our life, we have come to a crossroads where we know not what lies ahead.
This is a time when great fear can over take us and we can move into a state of panic. I call this, the “oh shit” stage. We are at a crossroads and we are not sure where any direction might lead us and we get scared and a little lost.
Being in fear keeps us from seeing the road directly before us. Instead we guess and doubt and second-guess and do not pay attention to the clear path that is before us. Fear will put up roadblocks when they are not really there.
Instead of fearing the future when things end, realize that there are new opportunities for new life ahead. Stay awake, choose wisely and all possibility waits. We never really know where each step will lead us in a day and yet we expect that we do. The unknown future is the truth of every moment for all of us.
Even when we think we have a handle on how things will go each moment or day we do not. What is important is seeing each moment as one of possibility and not fall asleep and take you or anything for granted. The direction we choose can change our life forever. If we choose something that is not exactly what we want we can always choose again.
In working with people navigating change in their lives, I recommend that they awaken to the new pathways that open up before them instead of fearing the future because they got off the old track of what always was.
Heal the fear and the illusion that life was supposed to stay the same and allow yourself to be open to all of what is truly before you. We do need to grieve the losses and then move bravely forward when new choices and opportunities arrive.
Sometimes we stay in the void for a while, reviewing and preparing for a new direction to come. Fishermen mend their nets when storms come and wait it out until the weather is clear to go back out to sea. And so with us we must do the same. Mend, rest, heal and prepare for that new direction, relationship, job or life and then begin to move into the direction that calls us and opens to new life.
In our lives it is important to do our best to be present and enjoy and appreciate who and where we are and be fearless in moving forward. Release the fear and allow yourself to be open to the new vistas and places and people that show up in your life.
